What does this test check?
Insulin is the hormone that moves sugar from the blood into the cells. In insulin resistance the body needs more and more insulin to keep sugar normal, so fasting insulin can be high for years before blood sugar rises.
Doctors use it in people with weight gain around the waist, fatty liver, PCOS, prediabetes or a strong family history of diabetes. It is read together with fasting sugar, often as the HOMA-IR score.
