What does this test check?
Thalassaemia is an inherited blood disorder. A person who carries one gene (thalassaemia trait or minor) is usually healthy but may have mild anaemia with small red cells. If both parents are carriers, each child has a 1 in 4 chance of thalassaemia major.
This test measures HbA2 and other haemoglobin types. A raised HbA2 points to beta-thalassaemia trait. It is advised for couples before marriage or pregnancy, and for anaemia with small red cells that does not improve with iron.
