What does this test check?
G6PD is an enzyme that protects red blood cells. People with G6PD deficiency, an inherited condition, can have their red cells break down (haemolysis) after some medicines, infections or eating fava beans.
Doctors test for it in newborns with jaundice, in people with unexplained anaemia or dark urine, and before starting medicines such as primaquine or dapsone.
