Prolactin Test in Hyderabad

Illustration: the pituitary gland in the brain signalling to a woman checking her period calendar

What does this test check?

Prolactin is a hormone from the pituitary gland in the brain. Its main job is milk production after childbirth. High prolactin at other times can stop periods, cause milk discharge from the breasts, lower sex drive and affect fertility in both women and men.

Stress, poor sleep, some medicines and thyroid problems can also raise it. That is why the sample is taken in the morning, after rest, and your doctor may repeat a high result.
