What does this test check?
This test looks for antibodies to HIV types 1 and 2 in the blood. It is a routine screening test before surgery and in pregnancy, and anyone can choose to be tested.
After a new exposure, the body takes some weeks to make antibodies, so a test done too early can be negative. If you have had a possible exposure, your doctor may advise repeating the test later. A positive screening result is always confirmed with further tests.
