What does this test check?
HBsAg is a part of the hepatitis B virus. If it is found in the blood, the person currently has hepatitis B infection. Many people with long-standing hepatitis B have no symptoms but can still pass the virus on and develop liver damage over the years.
The test is routine before surgery, in pregnancy, before dialysis or blood donation, and when liver tests are abnormal. A positive result needs further tests and a doctor's review; hepatitis B can be monitored and treated.
