What does this test check?
D-dimer is a substance released when a blood clot breaks down. A normal D-dimer makes a clot in the leg veins (DVT) or lung (pulmonary embolism) unlikely in people at low risk.
A raised D-dimer does not prove a clot: it also rises after surgery, in pregnancy, infection and older age. Doctors use it together with a scan when needed.
