What does this test check?
A 2D echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart. A probe is moved across your chest with gel, and the heart is watched beating on screen: the four chambers, the four valves, the thickness of the muscle and the sac around it.
Its single most useful number is the ejection fraction, the percentage of blood the main pumping chamber pushes out with each beat. That is the measurement that separates breathlessness caused by the heart from breathlessness caused by the lungs, weight or anaemia, and it is what heart-failure treatment is adjusted against.
There is no radiation, no injection and no preparation. It takes about twenty minutes and you can eat and drive as normal before and after.

Is the Heart Health Check better value than the echo alone?
While the offer lasts, yes, and we would rather say so than let you work it out afterwards. ₹1,200 is the standing price for the echo on its own. The Heart Health Check is a limited-period offer at ₹999 covering this echo, an ECG, a blood sugar and a consultation with the cardiologist, so for now it costs less than the echo booked by itself. No closing date has been set, and when it ends the echo stays at its own price. If you want the scan with a cardiologist reading it in the same visit, ask for the package while it is running.
Do I need to fast or prepare?
No. Eat and drink normally, take your usual medicines, and wear something that opens at the front if you can. The scan takes about twenty minutes.
Is it the same as an ECG?
No, and the names being similar causes real confusion. An ECG is a five-minute recording of the heart's electrical activity and costs ₹250. An echo is an ultrasound scan showing the structure and pumping of the heart. Many people need both, which is what the Heart Health Check bundles.
