What does a pns (sinus) x-ray show?
A PNS X-ray (paranasal sinuses, Water's view) shows the air spaces in the bones of the face. In sinusitis these spaces can look cloudy, show thickened lining or show a fluid level.
For children who snore or breathe through the mouth, a side view of the nasopharynx shows how much the adenoids are narrowing the airway. A CT scan is needed when an ENT surgeon is planning sinus surgery.
When do doctors ask for it?
- Blocked nose, facial pain or headache that keeps coming back
- Suspected sinusitis
- Snoring and mouth breathing in children (adenoid view)
- A swallowed fish bone or object (soft tissue neck view)
Before your X-ray
- Pregnancy
- If you are pregnant, or might be, tell the technician before the X-ray. Most X-rays can wait, or the belly can be shielded.
- Metal
- Remove jewellery, hair clips, belts and anything with metal over the area being X-rayed. Wear clothes without zips or buttons if you can; a gown is available.
- Children
- One parent can stay with the child. We use a lead apron to protect the rest of the body.
- KUB and abdomen
- Follow your doctor's advice. Some doctors ask you to come on an empty stomach so the bowel does not hide a stone.
- Bring along
- Your doctor's prescription and any old X-rays of the same area, so the radiologist can compare.
Frequently asked questions
Is a sinus X-ray enough, or do I need a CT?
For a first look at sinusitis, the X-ray is often enough. If your ENT doctor is planning surgery or the X-ray is unclear, they will ask for a CT scan.
Is the adenoid X-ray safe for my child?
Yes. It is a single side view with a very small dose. One parent can stay with the child, and a lead apron protects the rest of the body.
How much does a pns (sinus) x-ray cost at Caspian?
PNS, Water's view: ₹350; Nasopharynx for adenoids, Lateral: ₹350; Soft tissue neck, Lateral: ₹350.
Do I need an appointment, and when is the report ready?
No appointment is needed; walk in with your prescription. A radiologist reports the X-ray the same day and the report is sent to you on WhatsApp. The printed film is included.
