What does this test check?

Healthy kidneys keep albumin (a protein) in the blood. When diabetes or high BP starts to damage the kidney filters, small amounts of albumin leak into the urine. This is called microalbuminuria, and it appears years before creatinine rises.

The albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR) on a spot urine sample is the recommended way to check for it. People with diabetes are usually advised to do it at least once a year. Finding it early gives time to protect the kidneys.
